Mendip Community Transport (MCT), the local not-for-profit transport company, is on the lookout for new volunteer drivers for its hospital car service.
The charity, which won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2011, needs to recruit more drivers to cope with growing demand on the service.
MCT’s Mike Curtis said, “MCT estimates that during the current year the service will make over 10,000 journeys, and demand from patients seeking transport is outstripping the availability of volunteers.
“The hospital car service has become a lifeline to those patients who are frail and elderly and cannot use conventional transport.
“Users must phone MCT to arrange transport, then MCT’s scheduling staff contact a driver in their area.
“The charity covers the volunteers’ insurance whilst working with patients, and reimburses the driver’s costs with a competitive mileage rate.”
MCT provides community transport services in the Mendip and Sedgemoor District Council areas.
Anyone interested in volunteering should call Mike Curtis or Mike Forbes on 01749 880613.

Mike continued, “Volunteer drivers provide a worthwhile service, make a big difference to vulnerable people’s lives and thus become a vital part of the local community.”
