Jhalmuri in Frome has reached the regional final of the prestigious Tiffin Cup Awards, an annual competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the UK. They were nominated by David Warburton, MP for Somerton and Frome.
The Tiffin Cup was launched in 2006 by Michael Farbicant MP, Keith Vaz MP and former MP John Barratt. The aim of the award is not only to celebrate the quality of South Asian food in Britain, but also to raise vital funds for charity. This year, the competition is in aid of World Vision, the world’s largest international children’s charity.
Each year, MPs are invited to nominate a restaurant in their constituency as the best South Asian Restaurant in the UK. Last year, 94 restaurants were nominated from around the country.
David Warburton has chosen to nominate Jhalmuri, on Palmer Street in Frome. The restaurant will be visited in the coming weeks by a “mystery diner” who will judge the restaurant on food, ambience, décor, location and service. All participating restaurants are invited to the House of Commons for the announcement next month.
David Warburton MP said, “I’m delighted to nominate Jhalmuri for the Tiffin Cup, and thrilled that they’ve reached the regional final. Being a huge fan of Indian food I’ve been a frequent visitor to Jhalmuri for many years – their cuisine is second to none.
“I wish them every success in this prestigious competition and look forward to welcoming them to the House of Commons for the announcement of the winner on 27th October.”
Chairman of the Tiffin Cup, Keith Vaz MP said, “After the overwhelming success of last year’s competition we are looking forward to another chance to sample some of the best offerings of Indian food in Britain. I wish Jhalmuri the best of luck in the competition!”
