FROME’S unsung heroes were celebrated at the Annual Town Meeting last week, when civic awards were presented to local volunteers for their contributions to the town.
Mayor of Frome, cllr Richard Ackroyd awarded the Civic Awards to Ron Stone, Karen Stewart, Marjorie Morris and Bob Morris. Eleven-year old Isla Stockdale Coates received her award earlier in the day, when the mayor visited her at school. Cllr Ackroyd said, “I am delighted to be awarding five fantastic individuals who have all provided inspiration to Frome, in many different ways.”
Schoolgirl Isla received her award for her anti-bullying campaign in November last year, which resulted in a march by over 400 pupils from 11 local schools, helping to raise awareness and take a stand. Ron, who turns 100 this year, was honoured for his work in the community. He served in the 44th Royal Marines Commando before returning to Frome and worked for many years at Butler and Tanner. He also featured in the Working Memories Frome project.
Karen received her award for being an active member of the Frome community. She is chair of Trinity Community Group, a trustee of Fair Frome, lead on the Access for All campaign, and a presenter on Frome FM’ s On-Air Book Group.
Bob received his award for his role as chairman of the Frome Festival, now in its 19th year. A much-anticipated highlight for the town, each year the Festival showcases talent across the arts alongside global superstars, as well as bringing new visitors to Frome.
Bob’s wife Marjorie received her award for her role as the leader of the Society of Disabled Artists’ Frome branch. She is also a member of Frome Save The Children and the sponsorship team for the Frome Festival.

![Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May
A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.
The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.
Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.
Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.
There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.
