Inspired by others to run marathons for charity

LOCAL volunteer for St John Ambulance, Jess Ball, has been inspired by others to run in the London Marathon 2018 after volunteering first aid for the past five years.

When the Frome Times spoke to Jess she said, “I have been a volunteer First Aider with SJA (St John Ambulance) for over five years now, attending public events such as Frome Cheese Show, Frome Carnival and Corsley Show, as well as many other local and national events.

“The organisation has taught me vital life-saving skills, as well as giving me loads of confidence. There have been countless times when I have been able to use the skills learnt to help save people out on the street.

“I came across a young lady having a seizure in the Welshmill area of Frome. Her friends were very distressed and I managed to use my training and experience to calm them down and reassure them that everything would be ok. I called an ambulance for the young lady, while constantly reassuring her and her friends.

“Frome SJA unit has allowed me to make friends with like-minded people of all backgrounds and to get to know the Frome community.

“That’s why I have chosen to run the London Marathon and also the Bath Half Marathon in aid of SJA and would like to raise a total of £2,000. I have set up my justgiving page and have been regularly updating it with news of training and events I’m involved in.

“I plan to step up my fundraising from January by running cake sales and organising street collections both in Frome and Exeter, where I am currently studying for my maths degree. I am also working with the internal communications team at SJA to promote my fundraising efforts to other SJA staff and volunteers.

“I’ve never run a marathon before, but I have run two half marathons – Bath Half 2016 and Great West Run 2016. I really enjoyed taking part in these, so feel it’s time for the next challenge. I am very excited but also super-nervous about the big day since i’ve never run this distance before.

“Having provided first aid cover for the London and Brighton marathons for the last five years, I have seen the amazing people that have run for the charity before and feel inspired to give it a go myself and to give back to the charity that has taught me so much.”

After three sell-out shows, The Animal Guyz are coming back to Frome’s Merlin Theatre in the New Year with their wildly entertaining and educational show.

The Animal Guyz: Amazing Animals will be at the Merlin Sunday 8th February.

“This spectacular performance is dedicated to ‘all creatures great and small’ and features life-sized crocodiles, sloths, reindeer, penguins, orangutans – and even a spraying skunk bursting onto the stage right before your eyes, and no real animals are used!” said Craig, the original creator and Animal Guy performer. • Golf club raises over £90,000 for charity

A golf club in Frome has raised more than £90,000 for charitable causes since it began fundraising in 2010.

Orchardleigh Golf Club has held a series of events over the years, including competitions and raffles, in support of Dorothy House Hospice Care, as well as other charities such as Somerset Air Ambulance, Prostate Cancer UK and Diabetes UK.

Most recently, the club held a cup day, raising £3,000 for Dorothy House Hospice Care. The hospice provides personalised care to people in the community nearing the end of life. Club member Jim Worsley presented a cheque to Dorothy House fundraiser Katherine Bowhay and thanked sponsors and players for their support.

  • Ukulele group raise funds for local causes

Frome’s popular ukulele group, The Frukes, recently raised £1,200 at a charity gig.

The sold-out performance at the Silk Mill raised the funds for local charities Time is Precious, which supports children and their families in hospitals and at home, and Songs for the Memory, a singing group for people with dementia.

“It was a great evening,” said group member Roger Southard. “We played a mix of old and new songs, we had a bar, and we played two one-hour sets. It was fantastic.”

  • From The Mayor

Thank you so much to everyone who joined the town in marking the start of Christmas on 21st November what a wonderful night it was! And thank you to the organisers and the many who turned out for a brilliant Cobble Wobble on 23rd November too!

As promised, here is a little background on some more of my councillor colleagues.

Andy Jones has interests in education, finances and the Frome Festival. Polly Lamb, Councillor for Park Ward, is heavily involved in the planning team and eagerly supports women’s voices within the council.

Lisa Merryweather is passionate about mental health and supporting young people. Sara Butler fervently supports the ecology and natural habitats for wildlife. Anne Hills is heavily involved in repurposing digital items, she is the instigator of our White Ribbon campaign and worked with Prosper Frome to campaign for our long-awaited banking hub, now happily dispensing cash and serving residents.

  • Dementia singing group receives Christmas funding boost

A singing group for people with dementia in Frome has received a funding boost from a local charity to support their Christmas celebration.

Songs for the Memory received £750 from the Frome Masons and will use the funds to host a Christmas lunch for members.

One of the organisers of Songs for the Memory, Debby Webster, said, “The Masons’ support really helps us to keep our Songs for the Memory singing sessions free for the local community, something we are very passionate about.”

Songs for the Memory is a singing group for people with dementia and memory problems, and their carers. They meet every Tuesday at the Masonic Hall from 1.30pm to 3pm.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – Simple ways to support hedgehogs

At our last Wild Bunch gathering we were joined by Jennie from Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and Rehab, who shared her expertise on how we can all make our gardens safer for hedgehogs.

Inspired by her advice, here are some easy, practical ways to support hedgehogs that visit our gardens. One of the most valuable things we can do is create connected, wildlife-friendly spaces.

Hedgehogs roam up to a mile each night looking for food, so enabling them to move freely between gardens makes a huge difference. A small hole in a fence or wall of around 13cm by 13cm (the size of a CD) is ideal for a ‘hedgehog highway’. Chat to your neighbours to see if you can link up several gardens to form a safe route. Hedgehogs are good climbers, so if you have a stone wall creating a ‘staircase’ with rocks or logs both sides can help them access your garden.

Our next Wild Bunch gathering will be at the town hall on Thursday 18th December from 1.30pm to 3pm. This will be a relaxed festive meet-up over a mince pie, with an opportunity to plant a small pot of native Tenby daffodils to take home as a Christmas gift to nature at your doorstep.
