Iraqi lecturer to talk on terrorism and Afghan war

FROME Stop War will hold a special event next week and welcome a guest speaker – an Iraqi-born lecturer – to talk about the effects of the ‘War on Terror’.

Sami Ramadani will give a special talk entitled ‘US Intervention in the Middle East and the Rise of Terrorism’ at The Wheatsheaves on Wednesday 12th October.

Frome Stop War’s Sheila Coombes says, “Have you ever wondered why, since the 2001 US/ NATO invasion of Afghanistan and George Bush’s launch of the Global War on Terror, incidents of terrorism have risen dramatically?

“Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria have all suffered levels of terrorist activity not previously experienced. All of these countries have been at the sharp end of US militarism and interventionist foreign policy. Now terrorist attacks are being perpetrated farther afield in a blowback that should surely have been foreseen.

“Sami Ramadani was all too aware of the dangers for his native country Iraq, and security in the Middle East in general when the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was mooted. Although an exile from Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq, Sami vehemently campaigned against the 2003 invasion and was at the heart of the fight against intervention alongside Jeremy Corbyn and members of the National Stop the War Coalition.

“He has never given up his struggle to disclose the facts of the invasion, and went on to oppose the US/NATO war on Libya and its subsequent intervention by proxy in Syria and now in Yemen.

“Sami will be providing historical context to geopolitical events in the Middle East and exploring the rise of terrorism since the inception of Bush’s war on an abstract noun – the Global War on Terror.

“Please come to see Sami’s illustrated presentation including video footage. To really understand what has happened and is happening in the Middle East which is affecting the lives of millions, we have to look beyond the mainstream media and most of our politicians.”

The event is at the Wheatsheaves, Bath St. on Wednesday 12th October at 7.30pm. Entrance costs £4. For enquiries call 01373 839038.
