The identity of Buckland Dinham’s Iron man was revealed on Saturday when parish councillor Peter Corbett started his ‘ironathon’ in the village church.
By the time his six-hour spell at the ironing board was over he’d pressed shirts, shorts, trousers, pillow cases, jumpers, handkerchiefs and all manner of other items and in doing so had helped raise more than £300 for church funds.
He was taking part in the first open day to be staged in St Michael’s church, along with the Buckland History Group who staged a fascinating display of village memorabilia, flower arrangers Doreen Pitcher and Peggy Harris who demonstrated their horticultural skills, Jane Morgan who spent the day at her spinning wheel and bell captain Stuart Harrison who invited visitors to try their hand at bell ringing.
The church tower was open for the more intrepid to enjoy the view from the top and with morning coffees and cake, lunches and afternoon teas, the day attracted a steady stream of villagers and people from further afield.
“All agreed it had been a wonderful day and I would like to thank all who came and made this event such a success and everyone who helped on the day,” said church warden Jill Wright.
