ON May 5th the people of Frome will have the chance to decide who will represent them on the town council.
43 local people are standing for election to the town council, which has 17 councillors representing the six wards of Berkley Down Ward (3 councillors), College Ward (3 councillors) Keyford Ward (3 councillors), Market Ward (3 councillors), Oakfield Ward (2 councillors) and Park Ward (3 councillors).
Town councillors are unpaid, and do not receive any attendance allowance or payments for their duties which they undertake on a voluntary basis.
Mayor of Frome, cllr Helen Sprawson-White, is encouraging residents to have their say. “If you care about what happens in your community like me, then this is your only opportunity to choose who the best people are to make the decisions about our town,” she said.
There are 12 candidates for the Conservative Party, one independent candidate, three Labour Party candidates, 10 Liberal Democrats and 17 candidates standing as “Independents for Frome,” who are a new group of independent candidates.
Toby Eliot, IfF candidate for the Keyford Ward said, “What Frome’s really lacked is clear decision-making informed by the views of the people of the town. IfF will bring more open meetings and more opportunities for people to influence decision-making outside of meetings.
“If nothing else IfF have given the voters of Frome a proper choice. At the last town council elections in 2007 there were 20 candidates for 17 seats. In some wards there were the same number of candidates as there were seats, meaning it didn’t matter how you voted, you got whoever was standing. This time, IfF has a candidate for every seat, so the people of Frome have a real choice to make.”
