The incredible achievements of extraordinary people from across Somerset were celebrated at the first ever Somerset Heroes awards presentation ceremony on Thursday 2nd June.
Amongst the winners was Frome’s Andrew Carpenter who was recognised for many years’ loyal service to his beloved town of Frome as vice chairman of Frome 1300, chairman of Frome 2000, one time school governor at both Selwood School and Frome College, one time trustee of the Frome Memorial Theatre, representative of NODA, football referee, charity fund raiser for Tourettes Syndrome and chairman, director and actor for Frome Amateur Operatic Society where it was cited that he had made it a meaningful and relevant organisation for the 21st century.
The BBC’s Emma Britton hosted the evening, and certificates were presented by Elaine Waymouth, Somerset County Council’s deputy chairman, Matt Faulkner, BBC Somerset breakfast show presenter, and Ken Bird, editor-in-chief of Newsquest Somerset.
A total of 23 Somerset Heroes nominees – all either highly commended or winners – attended the ceremony at the offices of WPA, in Blackbrook Park, Taunton.
The awards were launched earlier this year by Newsquest Somerset, in partnership with BBC Somerset and Somerset County Council, to give a moment in the spotlight to some remarkable individuals whose achievements may not previously have received the acclaim they deserved.
