CYCLISTS are gearing up to compete for the title of King of the Cobbles at this year’s Cobble Wobble.
220 participants will take part in the 179 yard sprint cycle up Catherine Hill on Sunday 25th of September at 3.00pm, to try and become this year’s champion.
The race is split into five categories; under 14s, 14s-17s. 18s-49s, 50 and over and Singlespeed. The top cyclists from each group will then compete in the King of the Cobble race. All entries for the race are now full.
Organiser Andrew Denham is advising you get there early to get your spot on the hill saying, “There’s nothing like this, everyone in the crowd cheers you on as you try to get to the top of the hill as soon as possible. It’s a carnival atmosphere.
“People compete in fancy dress. We’ve had some great entries over the past few years, including a knight, the Pope, big bird – the list could go on.
“You do need to get your space early!
“The great thing about the Cobble Wobble is you do not have to be a professional to take part. You can come along, have a laugh, while supporting a local event.
“This year, there are bikes up for grabs courtesy of Charge Bikes for the top riders in the King of the Cobble race.”
While Frome has set the standard for the authentic uphill cycle ride, other areas cross the country are mimicking the Cobble Wobble, which has even gained international attention.
“I was contacted by Norwich in America, who had heard about the Cobble Wobble,” said Andrew, “they were interested in putting on their own version, which is a real tribute to how well the event is received.”
Last year’s overall winner was pro-mountain biker Chris Akrigg, who unfortunately will not be back to defend his title this year, as he is recovering from injury. However, Frome resident and Women’s Downhill World Champion mountain biker, Petra Wiltshire, will be participating.
This year marks the third anniversary of the event, which was originally organised to coincide with the Tour of Britain cycle race that passed through Frome in 2009. Since then, the event has grown in popularity and has had to extend its entries from 200 to 220 places to accommodate the high demand from entrants.
Andrew would like to give a special thank you to Charge Bikes, Frome Town Council, Red Bull, Frome Carnival Committee and Sydenhams in Frome.
