It is more important than ever to get your flu jab this winter

AS winter begins to approach, flu vaccination clinics are starting to take place across GP surgeries and local pharmacies in Somerset.

NHS Somerset say, “We are encouraging people in Somerset to get their flu jab. Getting the vaccination this year is more important than ever and is the best way to protect you and your loved ones from the dangers of flu.

“By protecting yourself and others, you’re not only helping to reduce the spread but also to reduce pressure on local services.

“Getting the flu jab is particularly important for people living with long-term health conditions, pregnant women, and those over the age of 50.”

Shaun Green, flu lead and director of clinical effectiveness and medicines management at Somerset CCG said, “It’s been a very challenging year so far and we want to do everything we can to help people stay well this winter. With Covid-19 still prevalent, getting the flu vaccine is more important than ever to avoid becoming seriously ill.

“My advice to people who are eligible for the free NHS flu vaccination is to get this done as soon as you can so you are protected for the entire winter period. If you are offered a flu vaccination this year, please accept it.”

NHS Somerset add, “People who are ‘at risk’ of flu are already at higher risk from contracting coronavirus. Research shows that if someone has flu and Covid-19 at the same time, they are more likely to become seriously ill. The flu vaccination is one of the most effective interventions to reduce harm from flu and pressures on health and social care services during the winter.”

Professor Trudi Grant, Somerset director of public health said, “The flu vaccination programme helps prevent those most at risk from becoming seriously ill from flu and helps protect the NHS at a time when they are already stretched. I urge everyone who is eligible for the free flu jab to take this opportunity to protect themselves and other vulnerable people.”

This year the flu vaccine is being offered free on the NHS to people who:

• Are 50 and over (including those who’ll be 50 by 31 March 2022)

• Have certain health conditions

• Are pregnant

• Are in a long-stay residential care

•Receive a carer’s allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick

• Live with someone who is more likely to get infections (such as someone who has HIV, has had a transplant or is having certain treatments for cancer, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis).

• Frontline health or social care workers.

The children being offered the vaccine this year, are:

• All children aged 2 or 3 years old on 31 August 2021

• All primary school-aged children

• All year 7 to year 11 secondary school-aged children

• Children with a health condition that puts them at greater risk from flu.

Children aged 2 and 3 years will be given the vaccination at their general practice usually by the practice nurse. School-aged children and young people will be offered the flu vaccine in school. For most children, the vaccine will be given as a spray in each nostril. This is a very quick and painless procedure.

For more information on children and flu vaccination, visit NHS.UK.

If you aren’t eligible for a free flu jab you are able to pay for one at your local pharmacist. Find a pharmacy that offers the NHS flu vaccine – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

For more information visit www.nhs.uk/conditions/flu/.

The Covid-19 booster vaccination programme will run alongside this year’s flu vaccinations, for more information visit Covid-19 vaccinations in Somerset – Somerset CCG.

  • Local women save and relaunch home-education project

Two women have stepped in to save and rejuvenate a home education project after parents were sent a notice that it was closing with ‘immediate effect’.

Frome residents Jessie and Hannah rescued the Phoenix Project, which has been running for six years at Critchill Manor Estate, offering a self-directed learning space for home-educated children aged 7 to 14.

The project had previously been run by dedicated parent volunteers. However, just before Easter, they issued a notice to families announcing its closure due to difficulties covering rent and continuing to run the space.

  • Volunteers needed as fun-filled Children’s Festival returns

Frome’s popular Children’s Festival is returning this summer to celebrate childhood with dozens of free activities for children and families — and organisers are calling for volunteers to help the day run smoothly.

The much-loved festival, organised by local family charity Purple Elephant, will run on Sunday 27th July, kick-starting the school holidays with events inside The Cheese and Grain, in the Market Yard car park, and throughout Welshmill Woods and Welshmill Park.

With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity wherever possible, activities will include basketball, boccia, goal practice, archery, dance and theatre performances, nature-based and wildlife sessions, crafts, scrapstore art and graffiti workshops.

There will also be glitter tattoos, face-painting, BMX workshops on the ramps, and music sessions in the professional Bert Jansch Recording Studio. The Key Club youth club will host a chill-out space, and there will be a dedicated baby-only area for the youngest visitors.

  • Frome sisters remembered with charity day truck convoy

Two Frome sisters, Maddie and Libby North, who died in a road collision on the A361 in 2023, were honoured and remembered at the recent Wessex Truck Gathering.

Maddie and Libby were killed by a drunk driver on the A361 in July 2023. The family is well known in the truck community, and at the recent Wessex Truck Gathering held at Frome Market, the sisters were honoured in a poignant convoy of trucks along the Frome Bypass.

This year’s gathering saw a turnout of 177 trucks from across the UK, including vehicles from Bolton, Liskeard and Heathrow. The event featured food vendors, trade stalls, a kids’ zone and a performance by The Chosen Few.

For this year’s event, the sisters’ parents, Jason and Verity, chose RoadPeace, the national charity for road traffic victims, as the beneficiary.

Films inspired by the climate are set to engage audiences this month as Frome’s International Climate Film Festival returns.

Organiser Julia Wellard said, “The inspiring stories are told through animation, video, film and music – many of them short, but none lacking in impact. You will find passion, thoughtfulness, humour and resilience, but above all a powerful wish to take positive action.

  • Friends to tackle Jurassic Coast walk for dementia charity

A Frome business owner is preparing to take on a 26-mile walking challenge along the Jurassic Coast to raise funds for Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Services.

David Wye, owner of Domesticare in Keyford, will be joined by his friend Elaine Keene for the event, which begins in Weymouth on Saturday 17th May. The pair are raising money in support of the charity following the recent dementia diagnosis of a family member.

The charity has been providing dedicated support for people living with dementia for over 30 years.

This year’s challenge follows their successful completion of the Macmillan Cancer Support ‘Mighty Hike’ last year, where they walked 26 miles through the Monmouth Hills.

  • Meet the free social running group bringing residents together – one pastry at a time!

A free running group in Frome is celebrating its first anniversary after a year of helping locals get active, make friends and discover the town – one pastry at a time.

Plod for Pastries, a free, no-pressure running group, was launched last May by two Frome locals Katie Geddes and Ben Wood, who were looking for local clubs to join and meet new people in a fun and active way.

As keen runners, they were already running to cafes for coffee and pastries, and to pubs then decided to extend the invitation to others in the community.

One year on and the group has grown in popularity with an increasing number of people joining to take part in the weekly 3km to 10km runs. The idea is that the group meet for a run then head to further socialise and eat or drink in one of Frome’s restaurants, cafes, bars.

  • Helping plants and wildlife in the climate chaos

Greetings, this is Peter from the Wild Bunch.

This March was the sunniest ever in southern England, with some record-breaking temperatures and long dry spells. Hence, wildfires are occurring in the moors while dry winter bracken and grass have not been replaced with less flammable new shoots. While these fires clearly have a devastating impact on both plants and animals, the underlying climate chaos is much more concerning.

Most plants use two triggers to emerge from dormancy: day length and an accumulation of average temperature or number of days above a certain level. This means that even if there is a long warm spell, a plant won’t emerge unless day length says it’s the ‘right’ time. But extremes of unexpected temperatures can cause a plant to override the daylight trigger and emerge or flower anyway with two painful consequences.
