Fashion shop ‘Truly Sopel’ on Stony Street, is appealing for donations of old bras to raise money for a breast cancer charity.
Owner Truly Sopel, says, “Since our bra bank arrived, I’ve been overwhelmed with the initial response. If anyone is thinking of throwing out any old bras then please do drop them into the shop and help support awareness of breast cancer by recycling and giving to charity.”
The donated bras will be given to the chairity, Against Breast Cancer, who receive £600 for every tonne of bras collected. The money raised helps to fund the charity’s research into new treatments, tools for earlier diagnosis and advice to reduce the risk of recurrence and secondary spread of the disease.
The bras are also used to help support small businesses in Africa. The charity explains, “Together with our recycling partners, our textile recovery project prevents these bras going into landfill, giving them a new lease of life in developing countries such as Togo, Ghana and Kenya, where bras remain too expensive to produce locally.
“Successful ventures like this keep many families in developing countries out of poverty, whilst providing employment for people at home in the UK. Any bras that are genuinely beyond redemption are dismantled and disposed of properly.”
To donate your unwanted bras, visit Truly Sopel, 14 Stony Street, between the hours of 11am-4pm Monday to Saturday. The shop advises that you call beforehand to check they are open – call on 01373 451222.
