Children and young people are invited to join Frome’s own Youth Choir to help make an extra big sound for its Christmas concert.
Frome Youth Choir will perform their Christmas concert at Christchurch on Saturday 20th December at 4.00pm and would love new members to join the group in the run up to the concert.
The choir sings weekly during term time (Thursday evenings 6.00pm-7.45pm at St John’s School), with a junior section for children aged six to 10 and a senior section for young people up to the age of 18.
The choir, currently 50 strong, is led by two musical directors, and a committee of parent helpers, who work together to give the children a rounded experience of choral singing, as well as ensuring they have great fun, singing songs ranging from the traditional, to musicals, to pop and film soundtracks.
Musical director Ben Collings, who leads the junior section, sang as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral and is studying a Masters in Music Performance at Bath Spa University. He said, “Our aim at Frome Youth Choir is to give the children a really good grounding in choral singing and singing technique, to give them the confidence and skills to sing in a group. We’d love to welcome new members to give us an even bigger sound and add to the fun.”
Tom Whitfield, a freelance singer, teacher, and conductor who leads the senior section is keen that the young people build their skills so that they can go on to enjoy choral singing throughout life. He said, “The choir gives the young people fantastic opportunities to perform, this year alone at the Merlin Theatre, at the Festival of the Voice at Stourhead, and at the Frome Festival.”
Tom MacCallam, aged 12, sings in the choir and said, “Everyone’s really friendly at Choir and there’s a really good atmosphere. The teachers are really nice and it’s good fun.”
The Christmas concert will feature carols, Christmas readings and festive songs. Tickets will cost £5 and will be available on the door. ‘Under 18s’ are free of charge.
For a free Frome Youth Choir taster session please come to St John’s School at 6.00pm on a Thursday evening. The choir costs £3.50 per person, with a reduced rate of £3 for siblings.
