THE Joy Ellis Trio are set to make their debut at Cooper Hall on Sunday 5th February in a special concert to welcome more people back to the venue following its closure almost three years ago.
The venue came back with a bang last month with a sell-out operatic concert – Loving Opera – featuring two young professional singers who are members of The Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne companies. Cooper Hall is now getting ready to welcome The Joy Ellis Trio.
Associate director Fay Goodridge said, “We wanted to come back with a bang post-pandemic even though there has been plenty of activity going on behind the scenes during the past couple of years, and the ‘Loving Opera’ event certainly did that and has set the bar very high.
“In line with our eclectic style of programming, we knew the next act we invited to play at the hall needed to maintain that high quality of performance but provide a complete contrast in style. We plan to make very good use of our Steinway piano this season, so Joy was a very natural choice of artist as a pianist, vocalist, and composer.
“In March 2022 Joy Ellis released her third album with long-time collaborators, Frome resident, Henrik Jensen on double bass and drummer Adam Osmianski. Recorded at the end of May 2021 her new material has a relaxed and minimalist vibe in keeping with the album’s title, ‘Peaceful Place’.
“Moving through the pandemic Joy felt there were no words she could sing to capture the grief and sense of loss that she and other people she knew had experienced. Therefore, she decided to compose an album with no vocals at all using her other instrument and first love, the piano.
“Joy has toured all over the UK supported by the Arts Council of England performing her original music at various venues and festivals including Manchester, Cheltenham and London Jazz Festivals and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. The release of ‘Peaceful Place’ is generously supported by Help Musicians Do It Differently Fund.”
