This week’s game saw Frome Ladies Hockey first team travel to Salisbury for an early and varied weather filled game.
Frome, coming off high spirits following a good winning streak, were looking to trump an inconsistent Salisbury 3s side.
Straight after the push back Salisbury were on the attack, putting Frome’s defence to the test. Rachel Chedgy, Becky Ball and Mandy Broadway held their composure, neutralising the Salisbury attacks and converting them in Frome’s favour. Jo Brooks-Scully, playing out of position linked well with Hannah Brooks-Scully through the middle, in turn providing great passing outlets to their wings in Lisa Powell and Lisa Gagiano.
Frome were the first to capitalise on a goal-scoring opportunity with a great sweep from Hannah Brooks-Scully, taking a deflection and hitting the backboard of Salisbury’s goal.
The second half saw Frome take an even more dominant stance on the game through a second goal, following an assist from Karen Moore to an in-form Juantelle Matthews who calmly struck the ball, giving from a 2-0 lead.
As the second half went on, Frome conceded a short corner. Salisbury looking to gain their first mark on the score sheet, could not get past goalkeeper Grace Rudlin who coolly kicked the ball away. Salisbury began to look nervous and a mistake from a defender gave Frome a chance to seal the deal with a flick. However, Salisbury’s goalkeeper had never faced such a scenario and was coached by a player on the do’s and don’ts of this situation.
This delay saw Frome unable to capitalise and the 2-0 was still the deficit Salisbury were aiming to crawl back from. Shortly following this the final whistle blew, with Frome once again victorious.
Whilst Salisbury failed to score they played a great game and were one of the toughest teams Frome have faced.
Frome 2s 3 – 1 Corsham 2s
Frome 2s went away to play old club rival, Corsham, and were looking forward to the challenges the opposition were going to throw their way.
Play settled down and Frome started to find their shape, linking well together as a team. Good supportive play down the right between Oakley and Mackinder opened up an opportunity to penetrate the Corsham D where Mackinder received the ball in front of goal and slotted it away to put Frome ahead.
Spurred on and managing to keep Corsham at bay with good defensive work from Shailes, Neilson and Baker, Frome broke again, driving down the left from where Restorick put a strong pass into Bath, who took the ball well and cleanly sent it flying past the keeper to increase Frome’s score line.
Making good use of their substitutions Frome kept Corsham on their toes with constant new fresh legs on the pitch, thwarting the changes the opposition’s coach made to try and get them on the score line. With good possessional play in midfield by Callum, Withey and Townsend, Frome ensured more opportunities were created in the Corsham D, from which an early ball from Callum caught the stick of Oakley and was deflected into the net, giving Frome a 3-0 lead at half time.
Corsham made more strategic changes to their team, which created difficulties for the Frome side and although more opportunities were created in the attacking D, Frome’s goal line remained at 3. Corsham’s hard work paid off and in the last 5 minutes they managed to clinch a goal but the result remained and 3 points belonged to Frome. Player of the match; Callum.
