FROME Lions held their extremely popular and successful second ‘Ride Kids Ride’ event at the Old Showfield earlier this month.
Over 170 children took part and around 800 laps were ridden. Children as young as two (six at least) to 13 years of age took part.
Children were invited to come along with family and friends and see how many laps they could complete in 30 minutes riding their bicycles, scooters or skateboards.
“There were two distances round the showfield,” reported the Lions. “A short one around the football field suitable for first school age children, and a longer one around the whole field suitable for middle school age children.
“There was also planned an accessible ride for children with physical disabilities using their own paediatric mobility aids, unfortunately there were no participants this year so the Lions have donated the prize – a family session at Harry’s Hydro – to a young lady who was hoping to attend but the date clashed with her respite weekend.
“Every participant received a medal to commemorate their achievement. As well as the medal, for every lap they completed they received a free raffle ticket which gave them a chance to win a new bike and helmet plus one year’s maintenance, which was kindly donated by the local branch of Halfords.
“At the end of the afternoon the winning ticket was drawn by Frome’s mayor cllr Andy Wrintmore, and the lucky winner was a young lady named Matilda – Matilda’s elder sister was so pleased that she ran around the showground in jubilation for several minutes afterwards!
“The Lions would like to thank Halfords, Frome mayor cllr Andy Wrintmore, Frome Town Council, and the students who acted as marshals, for helping make the event a tremendous success.”
