The Lions Club of Frome has this year suspended one of their longest running fundraisers, the hay bale collection, due to the extreme weather conditions experienced earlier in the year.
Lions member, Mike Geake said, “Towards the end of summer each year the club members approach the farming community in the area and ask them to donate bales of hay or straw . These are then sold to other farmers who have not produced any, with the proceeds going to a nominated local or regional charity selected by the Lions.
“Farmers who do not have any spare hay can also make a financial donation if they so wish. Over the years the annual hay bale collection has raised tens of thousands of pounds for local causes.
“The Lions recognise that the sustained dry period that we experienced in early summer has meant that hay and straw will be in demand this year and have taken the decision to suspend this year’s collection.
“The Lions would like to place on record the tremendous support they have received over many years from the local farming community, as well as the many firms and individuals who have lent transport and look forward to their valued assistance once again next year.”
