FROME artist and sculptor, Kate Dixon, has contributed a sculpture to the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge, Animal Agents, at Frome Library.
Kate donated the piece, ’Monkey With A Book’ to Frome Library where it will be on permanent display by the ground floor enquiry desk.
Kate said, ‘I can’t think of a more wonderful reason to have made a sculpture than to inspire children to read, and I look forward immensely to seeing how it gets used to stimulate further creativity.
“The library is a vital part of any community and supporting the one in Frome is a delight and an honour.”
Kate also produced a leaflet with a poem inside for children, explaining the process of making the sculpture.
With her work in private collections around the world, the last time her work went into the public domain was at Kew Gardens in 2001. It was the first modern sculpture to be permanently sited in the gardens for nearly 100 years.
The sculpture ‘Autumn’ was in situ for nearly a decade until it was stolen (along with a Henry Moore) when a gate was left open by mistake.
More recently she opened her house for the Frome Arts Trail and welcomed over 800 visitors to experience the artistic vision she has incorporated into her unique home.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national initiative running in libraries over the summer holidays to encourage children to keep on reading.
The event runs until Saturday 9th September so there is time left to join in, read books, collect stickers and work out the mystery of the graffiti in the library.
