FROME dad and owner of HydeAway bar, Adam Way, has completed the remarkable challenge of climbing (and descending!) Snowden four times in 24 hours to raise over £400 for mental health charity Frome Birth Talk.
Adam has said that he decided to support the charity after his partner Charlie experienced birth trauma with their eldest son and used Frome Birth Talk’s free counselling service to help her work through her difficult feelings.
Adam said, “Although I’ve always had a certain level of fitness and love all sports, I would never have considered taking on a challenge like this a few years ago. Raising money for a charity such as Frome Birth Talk was the added push I needed. It became about not just my personal goals, but what I could do for them too.
“After Charlie gave birth to our son, she struggled to even talk about his birth without feeling sad and emotional. After having sessions with Frome Birth Talk, she was able to work through her trauma. She realised her feelings were valid, and that she mattered too. This service was invaluable to her, and she was lucky enough to have more sessions through lockdown while pregnant with our second boy, whose birth couldn’t have gone better. We will be forever grateful for this service and will continue to support them any way we can.
“Throughout my life I’d always had limited self-belief, but through the birth of HydeAway last year I’ve come to realise that we can achieve so much more than we think we can.”
Frome Birth Talk’s director Suzy Cristinacce added, “We are over the moon about Adam and Charlie’s support. As an organisation that relies on grants and donations, having such support in our community means the world to us. We are really excited to see dads getting involved! We recognise that all parents can struggle with difficult emotions around the time of a child’s birth, so have recently changed our service so it is open to everyone, not just women. Our counselling service is for anyone who is pregnant or has lost or had a baby in the last year. People can refer themselves by emailing info@fromebirthtalk.org.uk”
