STAFF and pupils at Hayesdown First School are preparing exciting celebrations to mark the school’s 50th birthday this May.
The school is hosting a week of events from Tuesday 21st May, with open afternoons for ex-pupils and members of the community to come along to on 22nd and 23rd May.
To celebrate this important birthday, the children have also been busy designing a new logo for the school to use, and the school says there were over 100 entries with lots of creativity on show. The school council and staff members then narrowed it down and voted on their favourites.
There were runners-up in each year group, and the winners were revealed in an assembly. The two top designers were Kaila and Maddie and their entries were combined to come up with the final logo.
“We liked the special golden leaf edge,” said a Year 2 child.
“The number 50 really jumps out, so you know how old the school is,” said another school council member.
Ex-pupils’ comments welcome
Mrs Battersby, the head teacher, commented, “We are really excited about the planned celebrations and hope that lots of ex-pupils will get in touch and come along to our events in May. We want the children to know about the history of our school and feel proud of Hayesdown First School. We know lots of our parents also attended Hayesdown so it will be a celebration for them as well”
The school has set up a Facebook page and welcomes any ex-pupils’ comments about their time at school or photos they would be willing to share from when they were pupils. Mrs O’Donoghue, who is a teacher and grew up in Frome, is gathering all the information sent in. You can find the page on the Facebook page ‘Hayesdown School’s 50th birthday’.
Anyone with stories they can share from their school days or who would like to be involved can contact the school via the office at office@hayesdownschool.com or phone 01373 462718.
Sponsorship needed
To commemorate 50 years of Hayesdown, the school would like to gift every child a special commemorative mug to keep as a special memento. The school is looking for sponsorship to support this and hopes that there will be some generous ex-pupils or local businesses that might be able to sponsor this. Please contact the school if you are able to support in any way.
