A LOCAL artist who launched her own art company during lockdown is displaying her art at Bath’s Royal United Hospital to raise money for charity.
After finding herself out of work last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Jessica Dean – who lives on the outskirts of Frome – rediscovered a long-forgotten passion for painting, which has opened her up to a world of opportunities.
Jessica explains, “Upon leaving the military after 8 years service, I really struggled settling into a new working sector. I have done everything from being a postwoman around Frome to working at a local veterinary practice.
“Last year I was unable to find employment due to Covid and found I had a lot of time on my hands. I started painting in August, a few things here and there (a sign for my spare room, a present for my dad) which progressed to helping my friend paint murals for a nursery in Wells.
“I continued painting and decided to put my all into it. In October, I set up a website where I sell original artworks and prints; three commissions have travelled as far as America.
“I fell in love with painting because it is both therapeutic and challenging. A detailed piece takes discipline and dedication over many hours; however, the reward is seeing something that I have made and is an expression of me.
“In addition, I finally found part-time work as an admin assistant for the NHS at Bath Hospital.
“Tied to this, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to display my art within the hospital, amongst other artists, with one third of the proceeds going to the ‘Art at the Heart’ Charity.
“This is a huge and amazing achievement for me as it is the first time my art has been displayed publicly but also because I have no previous experience. The last time I painted anything was (probably) when I was 13, and having just turned 30 in February, it is safe to say I am quite the novice.
“Despite starting this hobby late in life I am proud to have turned it into a small business.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying creating and sharing my art, and I can’t wait to see how I progress in the future.”
