A rare collection of work by acclaimed Frome artist, Corinna Sargood, is set to go to auction later this month.
On Friday 27th June, Dore & Rees will host their Summer Interiors sale, with a special feature: Folk Art & Fairytales – The Magical World of Corinna Sargood. The sale will include 150 pieces from Corinna Sargood’s personal collection, many of which have never been offered for sale before.
“To know Corinna Sargood’s work is to adore it, whether it’s her technicolour embroideries which tell fascinating stories or her spellbinding paintings,” said Sally Perry who is lead at Dore & Rees for the Corinna Sargood collection.
“Her prints and etchings are intricate and wry, her automata are witty and technically accomplished. Even her furniture will make you smile. Once you step into the magical world of Corinna Sargood, you really won’t want to leave.
“Corinna embarked on her Mexican adventures when she was 50 and it’s here that she really found her subject. With its rich history, folklore and colourful festivities, the country is as fertile as her unstoppable imagination.
“It was sad to see the iconic pink camel house in Frome emptied but when you see how Corinna has transformed her care home room, you realise that it’s the people that make homes magical and Corinna has taken her magic with her. Now in her eighties and making embroideries more beautiful than ever, she is an inspiration for people at every stage of life.
“One of the stand-out pieces for us in the auction is a palm sized papIer mâché egg that had a small key-hole lens in it. It had a switch and we were curious about what it did so Mark Rees changed the battery and oh, are we glad he did! The inside of the egg lights up and you can peep into a glittery underwater world with a merman. We’ve had a lot of fun writing the catalogue descriptions for these brilliant and beautiful works of art.
“The whole collection is to be sold without reserve so we would urge you to view the catalogue, see the collection and register to bid. Until now, Corinna has chosen not to sell any of her paintings so the auction on 27th June is a rare opportunity to own a unique treasure from Corinna’s portfolio and collection.
“Most people bid at auctions online these days but it’s much more fun in person! When it comes to supporting Corinna, one of the town’s much loved and respected artists, we really hope to see Frome in the room on the 27th June.”
The auction begins at 9.30am on Friday 27th June. Full catalogues and registration details can be found at www.doreandrees.com. Viewing is Tuesday to Thursday, 24th-26th June, 10am-4pm.
