THERE was plenty of rock as well as roll when Frome’s Mayor, cllr Andy Wrintmore, visited Frome Roller, a much-loved weekly roller disco, generously funded by a 2021 Frome Town Council Community Grant.
Despite not having skates big enough to fit him, Andy enjoyed a special soundtrack including Kiss classic, Detroit Rock City, and appreciated watching skaters perform the Cha Cha Slide.
“It was great to see such a positive explosion of energy and joy, “ said cllr Wrintmore. “Now, more than ever, it’s important for our physical and mental health to get together and have fun, and Frome Roller is another excellent example of how volunteers are creating an inclusive, friendly and uplifting experience in our community.”
Established in 2014 as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, Frome Roller runs most Wednesdays during term time at the Cheese and Grain.
There are two sessions to choose from: 4-5.30pm for younger skaters and 6-7.30pm for teens and adults. Tickets cost £5 per skater, including hire of skates (sizes from child 8 to adult 12) and safety equipment, which is strongly recommended! Everyone is welcome, regardless of age, ability or background, and the volunteer skate marshal team work hard to keep everyone safe and having a good time.
Head marshal, Nigel Mclachlan, said, “We’re passionate about getting everyone out on skates! Roller skating is brilliant for improving coordination and balance as well as fitness, and with a funky playlist and fun games like limbo, we hope our events leave people feeling more connected and positive about life.
“We’re very grateful to Frome Town Council for helping us come back in a Covid-secure way, and we look forward to seeing old and new skaters alike!”
The Frome Roller team are also available for smaller skate skills sessions and private parties and fundraising events, at venues around the South West.
