Mells Village Shop was recently awarded runner up in the Saturday Telegraph Magazine’s annual Best Small Shops in Britain awards in the Best Corner Shop category. Dave Fishlock Building Contractors Ltd of Chilcompton, who constructed Mells Café, has now just been awarded Best Community Building for the oak and stone extension to the community-run shop, opened at Easter last year. In addition the café, designed by architects Llewellyn Harker Ltd of East Pennard to complement the ancient stone cottage housing the shop and the Lutyens shelter opposite, was highly commended in the Best Extension or New Build in a Historic Context category. The winners were ann-ounced at a reception hosted by Mendip District Council on Friday 16th March in Glastonbury Town Hall, which Bobby Hanscomb, chairman of Mells Village Shop Ltd throughout the design and building process, attended together with current chairman David Sheridan and Val King of Dave Fishlock Ltd.These annual awards recognise projects completed within the last two years of the highest standards, taking into account health and safety, compliance with relevant legislation and customer satisfaction.David Sheridan said, “These awards reflect the dedication of all those involved from the concept to completion. As the first new build on the main road through Mells for over 200 years it was important to design a café that now looks as if it’s always been there. Both our architects and builders should be very proud of these awards.”Dave Fishlock Ltd and Mells Café will go forward to the next round of awards for the whole of the south west, to be held later in the year.Pictured above: recent and current chairmen Bobby Hanscomb and David Sheridan with their certificates
