The Merlin Theatre is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an exciting season of events under the banner Made in Frome, showcasing the rich creative talent the town has to offer.
Since its founding, the theatre has been a cornerstone of Frome’s cultural landscape, providing a platform for professional and emerging artists alike. In honour of this landmark year, the theatre will host a special programme featuring performances from acclaimed professional companies, as well as homegrown talent nurtured within the town and the theatre itself.
“We are immensely proud to celebrate 50 years of storytelling, performance, and artistic development at the Merlin,” said artistic director Claudia Pepler. “The ‘Made in Frome’ anniversary is not just a reflection of our past achievements but a celebration of the future of theatre in Frome and beyond.
“We are presenting a season of work marking the venue’s five decades of artistic excellence, community engagement and groundbreaking performances. It will celebrate and champion the abundance and wealth of professional talent in the town.”
Kicking off on Wednesday 9th May, the programme opens with a special screening of Bluebeard by Frome-based Wise Children Theatre Company, followed by a live Q&A. This one-off event will raise funds for the Merlin through donation-only tickets.
The anniversary line-up features nationally acclaimed artists with local roots. Highlights include a rare performance by Mark and Paul McGann, performing together on stage for the first time in over 40 years; a new variety show by New Old Friends; and fresh work by local talents Marina Sossi and Pip Utton.
Also featured is a brand-new musical theatre show, composed especially for the Merlin’s 50th year by Frome’s own Martin Dimery and based on the life of Henry Vlll.
Later in the year, there will be a performance from actors training under the tutorage of Mark McGann and Drama Direct featuring scenes from some of the most successful stage productions in recent years from the National Theatre and London’s West End, showcasing the vital work being done to develop and support the area’s significant local acting talent.
A photographic exhibition celebrating the internationally renowned Mark Bruce Company will run throughout the season, honouring their 25-year history with the Merlin.
