Frome Museum is to mark this year’s season of Remembrance with an exhibition and window display on 1st-19th November.
This will take place throughout the first part of November and will reveal the impact two World Wars had on Frome and its district.
The exhibition will include various items illustrating how the town responded, among other things, to rationing, hints on make do and mend and salvaging (which we now call recycling).
In both conflicts, Frome raised hundreds of thousands of pounds in the form of war bonds and savings schemes to help fighting soldiers or else adopt war-planes and ships.
One of these ships adopted by the town was the submarine HMS Thunderbolt, which was tragically sunk in 1943, with the loss of all its crew.
Also on display will be folders containing the names of all those others in the armed forces with a connection to the town and who fell during the two wars.
The exhibition, curated by the museum’s Glynis Tingay, is free to enter. The museum, at 1 North Parade, Frome, BA11 1AT is open from 10am to 2pm on a Tuesday through Saturday during the exhibition, but will then close for the winter.
