Football is coming home to Frome as the long-awaited new third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP) at the Selwood Academy in Frome is now complete and ready for use.
The new facility was made possible thanks to a £498,621 grant from the Football Foundation, which is funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government via Sport England.
The pitch includes markings for 5v5, 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 football and has been installed with floodlights to help increase capacity and availability of the facility. Whilst Selwood Academy pupils will be able to use the pitch during the school day, the wider community will all also benefit, with improved access to a first-class sports facility during evenings and weekends.
The academy would like to thank McCardle Sport Tec and TigerTurf (UK) Ltd for their professionalism and support throughout the build, which ultimately ended in the project finishing ahead of schedule.
Jean Hopegood, headteacher said, “The children are so excited and can’t wait to enjoy all-year-round sports on this incredible playing surface. So many members of the local community, the local football organisations, the Premier, Somerset FA, the Football Foundation, the Academy staff and Governors have contributed to the completion of the pitch. We are looking forward to celebrating with them and recognising this contribution at a formal opening ceremony which will take place in April.”
The pitch is now available for hire every evening from 5pm – 10pm and weekends from 9am – 10 pm. Those who wish to book can contact the academy directly on 01373 462798 or email 3GPitch.Selwood@educ. somerset.gov.uk. Single and block bookings are all considered.
