A NEW support group for those living with severe allergies held its first meeting earlier this month and following its success, another meeting will be held in June.
The new group is part of the Anaphylaxis Campaign which aims to support those living with or looking after those with severe allergies.
Anaphylaxis is an extreme and severe allergic reaction in which the whole body is affected, often within minutes of exposure to the allergen and can be life-threatening.
The Anaphylaxis Campaign is a national charity and is the only UK-wide charity which operates solely for the growing numbers of people at risk of severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. The charity provides information and support to people living with allergies and their ultimate aim is to create a safe environment for all people with allergies by educating the food industry, schools, colleges, health professionals and other key audiences. Their focus is on medical facts, food labelling, risk reduction and allergen management. They also run a helpline service five days a week and campaign to improve allergy services within the NHS.
The Frome support group has been started by local mum and volunteer Helen Barnsley, who has two children with allergies, one of whom has severe food allergies which have in the past led to anaphylaxis. She says, “It can be a difficult and even a lonely time after diagnosis without a support network when dealing with a severe allergy or looking after a child with one.
“As the mother of a severely allergic child I know that Christmas, Easter, holidays and party celebrations can be stressful times, as can ordinary weekly trips to the supermarket. You have to become adept at reading labels on foods and advocating for your child’s safety everywhere you go. Eating out can be a minefield too. I have been lucky to receive a parent training workshop from the Anaphylaxis Campaign and came away much more empowered and a little less apprehensive of the epi-pens we carry everywhere we go. Talking the issues over and sharing tips on safe foods has been a huge help”.
Other types of allergy may be environmental, or may be triggered by latex, drugs or insect stings. The support group provides a chance to meet others living with allergies in the Frome area, to share experiences, swap tips, get advice and talk about what’s on your mind in a relaxed and supportive setting.
