A new weekly singing group designed specifically for mothers is launching in Frome this July, offering a space for women to connect, sing and support their wellbeing.
Led by local coach, speaker and singing facilitator Georgina Jones, Singing Mamas Frome is part of a national charity that uses singing to support maternal wellbeing and reduce isolation.
The sessions are open to all mothers, whether they consider themselves singers or not. Babies and young children are also welcome.
“Many mums spend their days caring for everyone else and rarely get an hour that’s just for them,” said Georgina. “Singing has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood and help us feel more connected. These sessions are about joy, connection and taking a breath in the middle of busy family life.”
Georgina is the co-founder of The Grief Disco, which was held as part of The Kindness Festival last year. Her son Osian died three years ago at 16 months old following complications. She said the disco was inspired by Osian and that following his death, her work has taken a different turn.
“Having experienced both the joys and challenges of motherhood, I found singing to be one of the most powerful ways to reconnect with myself and others.
“There have been times in my life when words haven’t been enough. Singing has helped me feel calmer, more connected and more like myself again. I wanted to create a space where mums could experience that too. No performance, no pressure, just the chance to breathe, sing and be together.”
Children are welcome to attend alongside their mothers, creating a relaxed and inclusive environment where nobody needs to worry about childcare.
Georgina, who is a qualified Singing Mamas Leader, said she is excited to bring the programme to Frome.
“I’ve seen first-hand how powerful singing can be for wellbeing,” she said. “There’s something magical about a group of women singing together. You leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.”
The group will meet at The Key Centre every Thursday from 10am to 11.30am. Each session will include an hour of singing and half an hour of tea and cake.
