The hazy, hot summer days have merged into the seasonal mists of autumn, and at the Frome Selwood Horticultural Society, as well as welcoming superb speakers, newly engraved cups have been received by the winners of the Annual Show, held at Selwood School on the scorching August Bank Holiday Saturday.
Vivien Maidment and Jo Klaentschi join the names of note of past champions, both now as winners across many classes, Jo for her delicious chocolate brownies, and Vivien not only for her perfect Alicante tomatoes that went on to win the coveted Ralph Showering Memorial Trophy, but also for her watercolour painting.
Bob Gallop retained his place as supremo flower grower, closely pursued by Pam Secker, and Jane Wood won the National Vegetable Society medal and also had most points in fruit. A tie between Anna Giles and Valerie Norvall in floral art set a tone that completely different styles are equally admired and indeed encouraged by judges.

Sandy Earner and Hilary Thomas both won in photography and National Open Gardens. Hosts Pru and Dave Moon have proved that they are equally adept at growing vegetables as they are in garden design and seasonal flowering, as both took prizes, including Dave gaining the Society Shield for Most Points in Show. That left the Lemons, Tony and Jean, both having their names engraved on cups, for best pot plant and Jean for most points in homecraft. So, all in all, a very successful day, with Jane Norris coming away with a happy birthday, and others retaining the fruit of their hard work.
Prizes were presented by friend and speaker at the Frome Horticulture Society, Angie Blackwell of Cottage Flowers, Ilminster, whose enthusiasm added to the celebrations.

The Frome Horticulture Society extends their thanks to the judges and to Selwood Academy for allowing use of their perfect hall and facilities. We look forward to coming back for the Plant Sale next May and the Annual Show next August.
The Frome Horticulture Society meets on the second Tuesday of the month at Critchill School, Nunney Road, Frome, BA11 4LB, from 7.20pm for a 7.30pm start. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
