THERE’S more to Barters Plant Centre than meets the eye! Although best known locally for selling plants to the public, it is also one of the leading wholesale nurseries in the West Country, supplying home-grown plants to garden centres, hotels, golf courses and even the Chelsea Flower Show.
And on Saturday 27th September and Saturday 4th October Barters nursery will be open for visitors to see behind the scenes and pick their own plants direct from the nursery – at trade prices.
“This is a rare opportunity for everybody to visit one of the largest wholesale nurseries in the area,” explained Legh Walker, who has run the nursery since 1985.
“The majority of Barters Farm’s business is growing and selling plants to the local wholesale trade, including garden designers, landscapers, contractors, schools, golf courses, housing developments, hotels, and garden centres. We also grow plants for the Chelsea Show Gardens.
“On the open day, visitors will be able to find out what we do, learn a little more about running a nursery and also finding out information on the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, RHS Gardening Courses, The Living Bar Company and plant hire for weddings and parties. There will be an opportunity to enjoy refreshments in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
“Autumn is the best time for planting and, for those planning a planting project, this will be an ideal opportunity to purchase plants. This year there is also a wonderful selection of unusual West Country apple trees available, grafted at Barters. These varieties were specially selected by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust for planting last year, in over 50 community orchards in Wiltshire.
“Barters is also a collecting point for yew clippings, which are used to make a drug for cancer patients. Please collect a bag and instructions from the Plant Centre. The money we raise from the yew clippings goes to the Charity Perennial.
“Barters is a traditional family-run nursery, focusing on growing and selling plants. We offer a wide range of top quality plants which are grown on our wholesale nursery in Chapmanslade.
“Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always willing to give help and advice. We look forward to seeing you over the next two Saturdays or at any other time.”
