Opticians collect old glasses for charity

A FROME opticians is encouraging locals to continue donating old and unwanted specs after collecting more than 300 pairs of glasses in December for an international sight charity.

Members of staff at Specsavers in the Westway Centre have been supporting Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) for the past year, collecting specs and raising awareness for the charity, which provides eyecare in some of the world’s poorest countries.

“We’re delighted to be kicking off 2017 with a donation to VAO,” store manager Mike Taylor said. “It’s a fantastic charity and makes a real difference to people who would otherwise continue to suffer with poor eyesight, greatly affecting their quality of life.

“With such easy access to affordable eyecare in this country, we can easily take our sight for granted. We want to encourage our local community to think of others this new year and continue to donate their old and unwanted specs!”

Vision Aid Overseas is a UK based organisation that works in numerous African countries including Ethiopia, Ghana and Zambia. The charity, founded in 1985, provides eye tests and glasses to those who need them, and aims to help those living in poverty who have little or no access to eyecare.
