A WINTER programme is over for the Mendip Ramblers, with members looking forward to the spring and summer programmes.
Elaine Dadley, for Mendip Ramblers reports, “There are times when walkers are more down and out (given the recent snow and other challenges) but even then they are definitely out!
“The winter programme is over, along we hope with the cold weather, but Mendip Ramblers are a hardy bunch and are given to turning out in all conditions. Occasionally that isn’t possible but that is nearly always because of the roads rather than the paths.
“The autumn and winter programme has been typically extensive and varied. Some walks are short and end with cups of tea, the longest walks – on Sundays – are more demanding and may need rewarding with something a little stronger! Most members choose the middle way on Thursdays. The post-Christmas period included some more unusual walks, including exploring the Combe Down tunnels in Bath, and getting as far as the Dorset coast.
“More than 50 members recently enjoyed their annual spring walking holiday, this year based in Torquay. The snowy conditions made for interesting walking – it’s not always easy to negotiate slippery fields and paths and deep snow drifts – as more than one or two people can personally testify. But the sun shone too and the coastal and riverside walking was beautiful. And, of course, there were “après walking” evening activities which enhanced our well-being.
“The spring and summer programme includes all the usual walking opportunities but also a breakfast walk for early risers, a pub walk for the later risers, and Mendip Ring and Wessex Wanderer walks too.
“The Yorkshire Dales team hopes to complete that route from Ilkley to Bowness on Lake Windermere in mid summer, and Brittany with all its charms beckons again! So, maybe new walkers will join us?
“Walking is good for you – usually – and we welcome all who just turn up on the day – so if you’re in the Mendip area on holiday, or have recently moved, or you’ve made an Easter resolution, check out our website and bring your boots!”
