Frome’s community radio station recently sponsored a ‘podcasting masterclass’ presented by one of the world’s leading podcasters, Richard Davies.
Based in New York, Richard Davies delivered his masterclass at the new Bert Jansch recording studio in Frome’s Cheese and Grain as part of a whistle-stop visit to the UK.
Now a media consultant, journalist and podcast host, Richard was a staff correspondent at the national network news channel, ABC News for nearly 30 years. “Podcasting is far more intimate than tv or radio and since people have chosen to listen by subscribing to the podcast, they pay more attention. This makes it a far more effective medium for getting a message across to your target audience. The podcasting industry grew by more than 40 per cent in the USA last year.” he said.
In his presentation to the Frome audience, he talked about his work and explained what a podcast needed, to make it interesting to an audience and keep them listening, and the dos and don’ts of recording podcasts.
Richard’s own podcast, ‘How do we fix this?’, tackles some of the major political issues of the day with some of America’s leading academics, commentators and politicians. He also makes podcasts for major US companies and organisations which they use to target messages to their potential and existing customers. Frome FM has been making podcasts as a way of raising funds for the non-profit radio station and continues to offer a full production service to local companies.
Local auctioneers and estate agents, Cooper and Tanner, have taken advantage of this new way of communicating with their clients, by producing a series of podcasts hosted by Gareth Wasp – one of their senior antiques valuers.
Gareth explains the world of antiques and collectables with podcasts covering subjects from antique silver and rare books, to Chinese porcelain and Swedish furniture. The podcasts, now in production at Frome FM will be available to download on the Cooper and Tanner website and also form a series of programmes on Frome FM.
