A new community café is opening at The Key Centre on The Mount this winter, offering free hot meals, snacks, games and creative activities for all ages.
Local arts organisation Terrestrial, known for creating projects with community groups around Frome, is running the café as a ‘warm space’ for anyone to come and spend time, meet people and perhaps try something new.
The café will be open from Monday to Friday throughout December and January, from 10.30am to 4.30pm, closing at 2.30pm on Fridays. There will be a hot homemade lunch every day and after-school snacks. And you can pop in any time for a hot drink.
There will be cosy corners for reading, tables for people wanting to work, a toy area for toddlers, as well as board games and quizzes for anyone looking to join in something sociable.
Once school ends at 3.15pm each day, the space will have games and arts activities for children with their grown-ups and teenagers – including pool and table football, cardboard construction challenges and film screenings.
Terrestrial’s Director Tom Spencer said, “The café hosts will set up different arts activities every day so you can try your hand at anything from still life painting to origami or lantern making.
“We’re excited to welcome people into The Key Centre for a winter of adventures. Warm spaces, where anyone can come and hang out without the pressure of spending money, are so important. And we’ve got all sorts of surprises planned to make the space even more exciting, from live music to comic clubs. And look out on the streets for representatives from a rather unusual postal service. We will be knocking on doors in the area with some fun creative tasks for people to do at home.”
The Key Centre has recently been reopened by Frome Town Council, who are supporting Terrestrial’s work. The Pop-Up Winter Café is funded by Somerset Community Foundation’s Help Through Winter Fund. Terrestrial’s work around Frome is funded by the Somerset Association of Local Councils and Arts Council England.
