SCHOOLS in Frome came together recently to make a live radio show to mark Safer Internet Day.
Pupils from Selwood, Vallis, Berkley, Beckington, Trinity and Oakfield schools all took part in the national day of action to promote safe and responsible technology habits in young people.
Selwood Academy’s Year 8 head girl, Josie Cowley reports for Frome Times, “On Thursday the 10th February, six Frome schools met to make a live radio show to mark Safer Internet Day. This year’s theme was ‘Be the Change’ and unite for a better internet.
“Pupils from Year 2 to Year 8 took part in this amazing project. Our hosts were Oakfield Academy for this exciting day. Our fantastic hosts gave up their library space to make and record the radio show.
“Russell Prue, of Anderton Tiger Radio was our tutor and mentor for the day. He showed us how to use the equipment and provided us with the relevant equipment to use such as the communication desk. My role was to look after the ‘Comms desk’ with another pupil. This vital role included reading out all of the ‘shout outs’ and texts that were sent in on the day.
“There were 10 categories to our show. Each category had up to 10 pupils that worked on iPads, computers and paper to create their broadcast. Categories included: Introduction, School News, World News, Sports, Adverts, Celebrity Gossip, Weather, a Radio Play episode and an e-safety feature with an interview with the local PCSO, Gary Maule.
“After two practice run-throughs we all got the idea of how to move about the radio studio and what to say. It was difficult to not get tangled up in the headphone wires. At 2pm exactly, we went ‘live’ to the world! All the groups took it in turns to deliver their part of the show. This time we were really slick and made very few mistakes!
“A big thank you to all the people who listened to our show and sent in message of support. We had lots of ‘shout outs’ and texts from supporters of our show which was amazing.
“All the pupils had a great time and I would particularly like to thank Russell Prue and David Oliver from Futurform Ltd for setting up and organising the day. The most asked question on the way home was ‘when can we do it again?’ Thank you to everyone who took part and all the adults who made it happen. A day none of us will ever forget.”
