The Society of Friends (Quakers) is not generally known for evangelising.
Juliet Solomon of Frome Quaker Meeting explains, “However, we believe, that for many people, whatever their religious beliefs, there is great strength, arguably badly needed at the present time – to be found in Quaker Meeting for Worship. We would very much like to make this available to more people. The Meeting is based around silence, as we believe that it is in the silence that we can perceive the Divine, (whatever we feel that is.)
“Quakers use many words to describe the Divine. But we believe that spending time in silence with other seekers for truth is for us the best way of encountering “God” . The collective worship gives us the strength to attempt to “live in truth” for the rest of the time. (for more detailed information, look up “Advices and Queries, Quakers” online).
“We believe that every person is loved and guided by, and contains something of,the Divine. Broadly speaking, we affirm that “there is that of God in everyone.” Everyone is known by “God” and can know God in a direct, albeit silent, relationship. We are called to attend to this relationship and to be guided by it.
“The Quaker way has deep Christian roots that form our understanding of God, our faith, and our practices. Many Quakers consider themselves Christian, but some do not. Many Quakers today draw spiritual nourishment from our Christian roots and strive to follow the example of Jesus. Many other Quakers draw spiritual sustenance from various religious traditions, such as Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and the nature religions.
“In Frome, the Meeting for Worship takes place on Sundays from 1045-1145 in the Key Centre, Feltham Lane We would like to welcome you to one of our meetings; if it does not “speak to your condition” we will entirely understand.”
