Rare Species, a Frome-based theatre company, has been awarded a Big Lottery Fund grant to enable them to offer free daytime comedy aerobics classes throughout the winter months.
You are invited to “reclaim your mojo back from the universe” up to three times a week for 15 weeks, running from 12th November through to March, in the heart of Frome.
The classes, called “Mojo Moves”, combine comedy theatre with dance aerobics to help improve people’s mental and physical wellbeing.
Mojo Moves sessions are led by larger than life character Cheryl and lifestyle guru Tony (aka performers Ginny Adams and Nelly Fowler) with music from the 70s, 80s and 90s – with some tv theme tunes thrown in for good measure.
It is a social event and is extremely beneficial to the mental as well as physical well-being of participants; they are able to reminisce, laugh, dance and get back to feeling like their old selves.
The idea is to encourage people who dislike the notion of conventional exercise to get moving and have fun in order to help combat mild depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), isolation and conditions related to weight management such as diabetes, but classes are open to anyone over the age of 18.
Performer and company director Ginny Adams says, “We are thrilled that our application to the Big Lottery Fund was successful, especially as the letter says “receiving this award is a mark of quality of the work you are doing in your community,” we just want to spread a little happiness but it’s lovely to get some recognition.
“It can be tricky to keep positive during the winter months as the nights draw in, so we want to offer people the chance to get together on a regular basis and do something fun to help beat the winter blues.
“We decided to run the classes in the morning to help set people up for a good day ahead and they are free of charge, so there are no financial barriers to stop anyone attending.”
The free classes are at 9.30-10.30 Mondays – Frome Youth & Community Centre (BA11 3EF), Wednesdays – Trinity Church Hall (BA11 3DE) and Fridays – The HUBnub Centre (BA11 3BY).
Rare Species currently also run pay-as-you-go evening classes four times a week in Frome, Bath and Box. For more information and to book your free space go to www.mojomoves.co.uk
