Local resident Gladys Ellis, who recently celebrated her 104th birthday, said her top tip for a long life is that ‘a little bit of what you fancy does you good.’
Gladys, a resident of Catherine House Care Home in Frome, celebrated her birthday on 16th October with family.
Born in 1920, Gladys spent most of her early years in Guildford with her four siblings.
During World War II, she served in the Women’s Land Army on a farm near her hometown. During this time, she watched near the A361 the haunting scenes of London Burning during the Blitz.
Gladys married Ron in October 1949 and was married for over six decades. The couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 2009. They went on to have two sons, Barry and Michael and Gladys then worked in various cleaning jobs.
In 2018, due to her cognitive decline, she moved to Catherine House Care Home.
Her son Barry said, “The old adage of ‘a little bit of what you fancy does you good’ is as true today as it ever was. She still loves her chocolate, as you can see.
“Other things I remember when growing up were regular simple meals, fresh air and certainly in her youth plenty of exercise. I am sure all those have contributed in part to her longevity.”
