A Ј4,850 study that will look into how to enhance the river running through the centre of the town, was given the go-ahead last week.
The Friends of the River Frome, a group of volunteers in the town some of whom are experts in ecology and surveying, has been given the nod from Frome Town Council to carry out the study, that aims to improve and enhance the River Frome.
As part of the study, a survey will be carried out along the length of the river corridor within the Frome Town Council area, from Blatchbridge to Spring Gardens to assess its current condition and potential for improvement.
The study will also outline a regeneration plan for the centre of the town, between the Town Bridge and Welshmill Weir, to provide a focal point along this stretch of the river.
Following the study, Frome Town Council hope to secure funding from Mendip District Council using the New Homes Bonus. This is where cash is earmarked for initiatives within a community where new homes are to be built.
Leader of Frome Town Council, cllr Mel Usher said, “I believe work can start immediately and hopefully sometime in the autumn the report will be produced.
“The Friends of the River Frome have all the relevant skills to undertake the study.
“Not every town has a river running through the centre and this project should enhance the River Frome.”
