Roland Kelly took part in the inaugural Celtman Extreme Scottish Triathlon on Saturday 23rd June, and successfully completed the first of his ‘4 extreme triathlons in 4 months’ challenge in aid of Positive Action on Cancer.
Roland was also quick enough to run the high course, including a climb up Beinn Eighe and finished in a time of 17hrs 4mins, earning himself a coveted blue T-shirt. The event based at Torridon in the beautiful west highlands of Scotland incorporated a 2.5 mile swim across Loch Shieldaig, a bike ride along a 125 mile circular route up the west coast and finishing in Glen Curran and finally a 26 mile marathon through the picturesque Coulin pass and over Beinn Eghie, one of the 280 Scottish Munros.
The race also requires athletes to provide their own support crew, so Roland had to convince his son James and friend Stephen Gauntlett to help him throughout what was to be a very long day. The Celtman is more like an adventure than a triathlon and probably represents the limit of what you could fit into a long summer day.
Roland is also going on to compete in another three extreme triathlons over the next few months to raise money for Positive Action on Cancer.
