Safety fears over traffic on school route

Worried parents have voiced their concerns about the behaviour of drivers surrounding the building site at the old gasworks  on Welshmill Lane.

It has become an issue of concern among local mothers that lorries are making deliveries to the site while children are walking to school in the morning. Combined with vehicles parked on the pavement and heavy traffic, this is making a primary route to two of the town’s schools a dangerous place to be.

Local mum Rebekah Arthurs walks the route daily with her six year-old daughter.

Rebekah said, “I have seen huge lorries reversing and offloading pallets, and vans and cars parked on the pavements. People in wheelchairs have been forced to dismount the pavement into the road, along with people pushing buggies and parents with children. A number of scooters have had near misses too.

“Despite complaints from me and numerous other frustrated and highly concerned parents, we have had no reassurance from the contractors or Somerset Highways.

“I don’t want to cause upset or make enemies, but I’m concerned about the  safety of pupils from the two primary schools, and older children from Oakfield and Selwood who use this route to and from school.

“The invasion of wheelchair space is concerning too, considering Rosetti Residential House is just yards away. This situation has been going on for months now and is causing dangerous tailbacks, with some vehicles having no option but to reverse back through the bridge.

“I don’t understand why vehicles can’t be kept on the site or in a nearby car park. There are no barriers or yellow lines so the road is already unsafe considering there are two primary schools nearby; these vehicles are adding to the danger.”

The building site is on the site of the old Frome Gasworks on Welshmill Road. As well as the residential home, it is in close proximity to St Louis Catholic Primary School and Vallis First School.

Videos recorded by Rebekah have shown that during traffic jams, parents and children have had to squeeze between the wall and vans parked on the pavement to avoid walking in the road.

There was also footage of pavements on both sides of the road being blocked simultaneously by cars, vans, and heavy goods vehicles. Cars could be seen having to wait while lorries reversed up the narrow road and into the building site.

The videos showed schoolchildren walking around and behind reversing lorries, and along the road where there was no pavement space available.

Nobles Construction is the company in charge of the site. Project manager Matthew Mustoe said, “Nobles Construction have been operating for over 20 years and specialise in regeneration projects which are often in town centre locations that due to their previous usage are always notoriously difficult to service.

“To this end we are well versed in the necessity to maintain pedestrian access at all times and in order to do this we restrict delivery times to outside peak foot fall times i.e. school opening and closing hours, we specify non-articulated vehicles to enable delivery waggons to physically enter the site to be unloaded therefore minimising disruption to our neighbours.

“We are also a member of the considerate constructers scheme and take our obligations very seriously, carrying out bi-weekly consultations with local residents and anyone who we feel our construction operations could possibly impact on. We have been operating directly adjacent to a care home for the duration of the project and have not received any negative feedback/complaints.

“A lot of the parking problems are a result of our contractors arriving very early and taking limited available parking spaces along Welsh Mill Lane. People arriving later on in the day to visit relatives in the care home and dropping children off to school then have to park further up the road. At this point the carriage width narrows which causes people to park on the foot paths.

“To minimise disruption going forward we have worked with the local constabulary to the point where we encouraged ticket enforcement to anyone who was parking directly on the footpaths outside our development.”

A spokesperson for Mendip District Council said, “Mendip District Council is looking into the concerns raised by local residents and will try to resolve the situation by highlighting these hazards to the developer.”

  • School pays tribute ‘passionate and dedicated’ teacher

A tribute has been paid to a much-loved maths teacher at Selwood Academy who died last month.

Andrew March, who died on 25th January from cancer, was a teacher for 27 years and worked at Selwood Academy for eight years. He was known for his infectious enthusiasm for mathematics, his love of sport, and his infamous collection of over 200 ties.

The school flew its flag at half-mast in his honour.

A tribute issued by Selwood Academy said, “Andrew was not just someone who worked in this school; he was someone who helped shape it. As a passionate and dedicated mathematics teacher, Andrew brought an infectious energy, clarity, and genuine enthusiasm to his subject. His love for problem-solving extended far beyond the classroom, reflecting a rare talent for untangling complexity and making mathematics accessible and engaging for every pupil.

“Sport was a very big part of Andrew’s life and that of his family; wife Nichola and his two sons Rory and Will."

  • Strong start for cancer charity’s urgent fundraising appeal

Frome-based cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) has raised 24% of an urgent appeal to keep the charity open.

WHY needs to raise £55,000 by 31st March or it faces the risk of closure. It has so far raised £13,500 since the appeal launched at the start of the year.

The charity, based on North Parade, works across the region, offering counselling to people living with cancer and other life-threatening conditions, as well as family members, close friends and those who have been bereaved.

Chief Executive Officer of WHY, Lucy Kitchener, said, “Thanks to the generosity of our community, we’ve now reached 24% of our £55,000 target – an encouraging start, but we still have a long way to go to secure the future of WHY’s free and low-cost specialist support for people affected by cancer and life-changing conditions.”

  • Rotary and Lions raise over £19,000 for local causes.

More than £19,000 has been raised for local causes by Frome Lions and Rotary’s Santa Float during the festive period.

The 50-year-old tradition saw volunteers make 21 trips on 17 nights and three afternoons over the three weeks running up to Christmas, visiting Frome and surrounding villages while facing heavy rain and high winds.

The float travelled 75 miles across its route, with the 100 volunteers involved walking more than 1,100 miles in total.

This year’s collection set a record of over £19,000, with 12.5% coming from contactless and online donations. The funds will be used by Rotary and Lions to support welfare and community projects in and around Frome.

Richard Lines, President of Frome Rotary, which celebrated its centenary last year, said, “In the 100th year of Rotary in Frome, it is fantastic that Santa’s long-running traditional visit to Frome goes from strength to strength. With over 100 volunteers coming out from Rotary and Lions, we were delighted to be joined by staff from Rotary’s new Corporate Member, Wainwright’s, as well as other groups from around Frome.”

  • Frome resident to give talk on Dorset Museum.

A talk on the Dorset Museum and Art Gallery will be given on 7th February at the next Frome Society Saturday afternoon lecture.

Frome resident Claire Dixon is Executive Director of the Dorset Museum and Art Gallery in Dorchester. She will give a talk about the museum, its collections, and its recent major transformation and extension, funded by Lottery grants, into the modern museum it is today.

Organisers say, “Founded in 1846, the museum covers the county’s history and environment. Its neo-Gothic building was built in 1881 and was designed to house the museum’s enormous collections. But collections grow and in 2016 the museum launched its vision to extend its historic building and bring all its collections under one roof for the first time. Transformation on this scale takes time and the museum was closed from October 2018 until May 2021, the Covid pandemic hindering the process of rebirth.

  • Local child’s case prompts MP to campaign for medical cannabis access.

Frome MP Anna Sabine is campaigning for clearer NHS access to medical cannabis for children after a young constituent with life-threatening epilepsy has had to pay almost £60,000 for privately prescribed medication.

The MP raised the issue during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 14th January, highlighting the case of Clover, who suffers uncontrolled seizures if left untreated. She called for a dedicated NHS pathway and properly funded clinical trials to ensure all children can access treatment regardless of family circumstances.

“35,000 children, including my constituent Clover, live with uncontrolled, life-threatening epilepsy,” the MP told the House of Commons. “Those who can afford it are already benefiting from prescribed medical cannabis, yet families face endless delays, confused trials, and a Home Office process designed for criminal misuse, not healthcare.”
