For many people who are losing their sight, coming to terms with sight loss can be a lonely and isolating experience.
Fortunately, local independent charity, Somerset Sight, offers a range of activities, training sessions and services to support visually impaired people across the county.
As an independent charity, Somerset Sight relies on volunteers to deliver a full programme of events. As many of the services Somerset Sight provides are run from their Taunton headquarters, the charity relies on volunteer drivers to ensure people from across the county can benefit from the services they provide.
One crucial service Somerset Sight provides thanks to volunteers is the “seeing life differently” course. The course, which runs for a day a week over four weeks, is designed to support people who are recently diagnosed with sight loss or are struggling to come to terms with their deteriorating vision.
The course teaches people new skills, including training in the use of assistive technology, information on mobility aids and information on support that may be available, either through Somerset Sight or other providers.
Ann, who attended a recent seeing life differently course said, “The course was brilliant, it taught me a lot. Everyone at Somerset Sight was very kind and helpful. It’s so nice to know there’s someone to turn to!”
Somerset Sight is urgently seeking volunteer drivers in the Frome area to ensure people like Ann can continue to benefit from services such as the Seeing Life differently course.
Michelle, a volunteer coordinator at Somerset Sight, said, “Volunteer drivers are crucial for allowing people living with sight loss to regain the independence to attend social events and activities. We’re currently desperate for volunteer drivers in Frome and surrounding areas.
“If you have a full driving licence, own a vehicle, and have a couple of hours a fortnight free to make a difference in your local community, please consider volunteering with Somerset Sight. You can call Somerset Sight on 01823 333818 or email admin@somersetsight.org.uk.”
