FIXED speed cameras could be installed in Frome as despite speed campaigners stepping up their efforts to slow drivers down, speeds have increased.
The latest speed enforcement figures for the Frome area from April to June shows an increase 17.9% in police detections with certain areas of Frome continuing to be problematic.
Figures show at the 30mph zone at Berkley School there has been in increase of 369% in recorded detections, as well as big increased at Culverhill and Bath Road. There is not a single site in Frome that did not show an increase in the previous three months.
Ashley Reay of Mendip Community Speed Watch said, “Unfortunately we will be going down the road of applying to Mendip District Council for the installation of fixed speed cameras as no matter how many warning letters are sent, how many prosecutions there are, the public seem to be unable or rather unwilling to curb their thirst for excessive speed.
“Those vehicles recorded at high speeds by CSW are now informed by severe warning letter that their details will be passed onto the Speed Enforcement Unit, who will monitor the vehicle when next in the area. It might not be this week or even next month, but sooner or later these high speeding vehicles will be caught and prosecuted, the penalties for which are now very high.
“This is quite a sad state of affairs as we move to even more enforcement, but it’s not as sad as having a policeman knocking on the door telling you that a loved one has been killed on the road.”
