Editor, Ian Drew, with Person of the Year 2017 winner, John Fuller.

FROME’S Person of the Year 2017 award has been won by Frome Collegians co-founder, John Fuller.

Hundreds of votes were received in the competition, which was organised by Frome Times to find the person who has made a real contribution to the community in 2017.

John has been a key member of the Frome sporting community for more than 60 years, volunteering for the local judo, boxing, gym, swimming, basketball and cricket clubs although he is best known at Frome Collegians, where he is still club physio, a committee member and a part of the grounds team, even at the age of 87.

“I am absolutely proud to win Frome’s Person of the Year, not just for myself but for the Frome Collegians,” he said. “All of my work is done completely voluntarily but I’m not the only one; there are so many people involved in the club and in other sports in the town. This award is for all of them. It was a real surprise just  to be nominated, let alone to win. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me for their kindness and thoughts for the work I have done for Frome over the years.”

Comments from voters included, “His dedication to Frome Collegians football team is truly inspiring.”

“He has given a lot over the years and it’s incredible that he still turns up to every game on a Saturday afternoon at the grand age of 87! Everyone at the club adores him.”

“John has worked tirelessly for the town over many, many years, and still does.  He deserves this recognition for his commitment, energy and enthusiasm.”

“He is an amazing man who has been fundamental in keeping kids off the streets and engaged in sport.”

Ian Drew, editor of Frome Times, presented the winner’s shield to John last week. Ian said, “Congratulations to John on winning our Person of the Year award for 2017. It’s clear that John has taken a lot of time and effort to ensure there are plenty of sporting opportunities for the young people of Frome. He has dedicated a huge chunk of his life to give back to the community and I feel he is a very worthy winner of this award.

“All this year’s nominees were worthy of the award and deserve praise for their efforts and contributions to the town. They can all feel proud to have been involved and to know they have made such a big impact on local people’s lives.”

Other nominees were Patrick Abrahams, Euan Barker, Terry Burton, Des Harris, Katy Harris, Kirstie Jones, Shaun Takle and Charles Wood

  • Somerset Council to consult on Frome school structure.

An informal consultation into whether to change the schooling system in Frome to a two-tier structure is due to run next month.

The consultation by Somerset Council will seek views on whether to change 18 Frome schools from a three-tier structure into a two-tier system.

A two-tier system would mean pupils would join a primary school aged four before moving to secondary school in Year 7. The majority of schools in Frome currently operate a three-tier system, with pupils attending first schools (Reception to Year 4), middle schools (Years 5 to 8) and an upper school (Years 9 to 13).

Conversations about the possibility of moving to a two-tier system first began as far back as 2023 and have been ongoing ever since.

The informal consultation will begin after the February half-term break and will ask whether the community would support a move to a two-tier education system.

To end the season in style, the team hosted a Story Saturday on 24th January and is hosting a big community feast on Saturday 31st.

“We have served over 1,000 bowls of hearty food to the local community since opening at the start of December,” said Tom Spencer, director of Terrestrial, which runs the initiative.

  • Frome singers give comfort to the dying.

People receiving end-of-life care are being offered moments of peace by the Frome branch of a national choir.

Frome’s Companion Voices sing lullabies around bedsides to bring calm and joy, offering a free service to anyone who requests it for their loved one.

The group is led by Celia Libera, who is keen to hear from potential singers. She said, “All we ask for is the ability to hold a tune and blend your voice with those of other people.”

The local group currently has 10 members and meets on the third Monday of the month in The Good Heart on Palmer Street, with additional meetings held in members’ homes.

Companion Voices generally offer three to five of their members to sing at a bedside and are careful to ensure that the request comes from a close relative or carer, so that they can be confident it is what the dying person would want.

  • Frome drama group celebrates 80 years.

A drama group in Frome is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, entertaining audiences in the town for eight decades.

Frome Drama was founded as Frome and District Dramatic Society in 1946 and now has 130 members. This year it is performing two anniversary shows to mark the occasion.

The group regularly puts on performances in Frome, aiming for three productions a year, including two full-length plays and one as part of the Frome Festival. It also runs workshops and holds monthly play readings.

Celebrating 80 years in style, the first of the group’s anniversary shows, Jack Absolute Flies Again, is set during the Battle of Britain and will take place in April.

“A fitting play to begin our 80th year,” said Roo Kapadia, chairperson of the group.

“We’re going to have bunting everywhere; it’s a very funny play and we’re all really enjoying rehearsals.”

  • Frome teen releases second song after LA recording session

A Frome teenager has released her second song after recording in Los Angeles with a major record label.

Erin Ross-Osborne, also known as Erin Rose, released her new single ‘Wild Fire’ following a trip to LA to work with the label, Def Jam Recordings, which is owned by Universal Music Group.

Erin, who turns 18 in a few weeks, is studying for her A-Levels at Frome College. Her first single was released in 2024 after a video of her singing posted by her mum on TikTok drew interest from record executives, leading to a trip to Los Angeles for recording sessions.

‘Wild Fire’ was released on 24th January, and with one more song yet to come out, the label will monitor the interest and streaming numbers to decide whether to sign her.

“I am excited but also nervous because I don’t know what people’s opinions are going to be, but I am excited to find out,” said Erin.

  • Frome to introduce town-wide membership of walking safety app

A free, town-wide membership of a walking safety app is set to be introduced in Frome as part of efforts to improve safety for residents walking at night.

The one-year membership of the WalkSafe app will allow users to plan routes using well-lit streets, report poor lighting or unsafe areas, and share their live location with trusted contacts.

The app will be available for free to all residents, and the scheme forms part of the town council’s three-year White Ribbon pledge to tackle violence against women and girls.

Presenting the proposal, Lucy McMahon, Lead Marketing and Communications Officer, said the scheme responds to concerns raised locally about safety at night.

“The biggest type of crime in Frome is violence and sexual offences,” she said. “Obviously not all of that is violence against women and girls, but it exemplifies that it is an inarguable problem.”

  • Cancer treatment centre opens in Frome

A new cancer treatment centre has opened in Frome, enabling patients to receive vital treatments closer to home.

The new Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) Centre, based at Frome Medical Centre, officially opened on Thursday 22nd January.

A fundraising campaign from the Bath Cancer Support Unit Group raised £64,000, supported by a grant from The Richard Oatley Foundation and donations from the Frome Rotary Shop, run by the three Rotary Clubs in Frome together with Frome Inner Wheel. Additional support came from individual donors, including collections at Frome Sainsbury’s.

The SACT Centre will serve patients undergoing treatment at the Royal United Hospital (RUH), Bath, who live within the Frome catchment area.

Frome branch of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group said, “This project would not be possible without the generosity, dedication, and community spirit of our funders and supporters. Together, we are making a meaningful difference, bringing essential cancer treatment closer to home and improving the experience of patients across Frome and the surrounding area.”

  • Frome GP surgery urges residents to use NHS app

Local GP surgery, Frome Medical Practice, is reminding residents that downloading and using the NHS App is a simple and secure way of managing their health care.

The NHS App supports patients to order repeat prescriptions, view their GP health record, receive reminders and messages and much more, including booking some routine appointments. The NHS App is free to download and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Proxy access is an additional feature of the NHS app that more patients are now using.

Sometimes referred to as a linked profile, proxy access allows trusted friends or loved ones to support those who need help with using the services provided within the NHS App, whether it’s a young child, elderly parent or friend with complex needs.
