A FROME resident who is 101 years old, has been awarded an Honorary Lifetime member certificate from members of the Royal British Legion Frome branch.
Owen Hillier was a member of the Air Force Service police bomber command at Kilmington, and received the MBE for his services to the community, after working for Mendip District Council and as an active volunteer for the community.
Owen and his family also helped raise in excess of £72,000 for Dorothy House Hospice Care during the Covid-19 pandemic, by completing walks similar to Captain Tom Moore.
Jane Norris, accompanied by chairman, Richard Aspray, members of the RBL and Brodie, a therapy dog on behalf of Dogs for Health a Frome-based charity, presented the certificate to Owen in an emotional meeting, in which Owen responded with a small but emotional speech.”
Owen said, “To receive this award is an honour and very unexpected, I have been very lucky through the war and my life with my marriage and my children.”
Jane Norris said, “I have known Owen and Peggy, his wife, all my life and he was justly awarded the honorary membership, and it is our honour to him for his services to the RBL for 70 years. Owen is one who serves, but does not seek to be served.”
