PUPILS at the Steiner Academy Frome last month raised £1,301 for their school library with a two week long sponsored read.
Pupils and teachers dressed as characters from their favourite books as part of World Book Day and took part in a lively assembly where they were able to show off some amazing costumes and hear teachers read passages from their favourite books.
Two pupils at the school said, “It was so much fun to dress up, I wish it could last a week” and “I love reading!”
Ann Gulbis, teacher of Class 5 said, “It has been great to see the children enjoying books so much, and our daily reading activity continues. The generosity of the School Community has been quite overwhelming, both in sponsorship money and in donations when the children dressed as book characters. We look forward to our library developing as our school grows.”
The principal Trevor Mepham said of the event, “Reading opens doors to the ideas of the world and the treasures of life. We follow two fundamental aims in our approach to reading: to guide and help the children to learn to read, and to kindle an interest and joy in language and reading, for life.”
The last word goes to Groucho Marx who, with his tongue probably in his cheek said, “I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
