The first of this year’s Walk ‘n’ Talk sessions at Frome Dissenters’ Cemetery will take place on Saturday 12th April from 11am to 12pm.
These Walk ‘n’ Talk sessions will run on the second Saturday of each month from April to September. If it’s wet, the talk will take place in the Chapel.
Organiser Jim Parsons said, “Come along and learn a little about the history of some of the 6,200+ people buried here, the plans now being progressed to make this area one for quiet contemplation, and enjoy a walk around the site, taking in nature in many forms—flowers, trees, insects, maybe badgers or foxes and a variety of birdlife.”
“There is no charge, but donations towards the upkeep and maintenance would be gratefully received.”
Constructed in 1851, Frome Dissenters’ Cemetery is a unique burial ground located on Vallis Road. Originally built for non-conformists or Protestant dissenters, the registers show that members of every church in Frome have been buried here, including several Roman Catholics, such as the Difazio family.
Some of the people buried here include 10 servicemen from World War I, who are interred in recognised Commonwealth War Graves Commission graves, as well as two people from World War II.
Some are not in Commonwealth War Graves because they had been discharged from service before they died. Others who died overseas are commemorated on family graves, including one from the Boer War.
