Frome Bridge Club members took part in the British Summer Sim Pairs contest recently, where 34 members competed against 894 bridge players from across the UK.
“The results revealed Frome bridge players to be punching their weight on a nationwide level,” said a member of Frome Bridge Club, Sarah Miller.
“Playing in a face-to-face bridge session at Frome’s Wesley Methodist Church, an impressive three Frome Club pairs came in the top 20 out of a total of 447 pairs, from as far afield as Jersey, Oswestry and Morpeth.
“Congratulations to the highest-performing Frome pair, Marianne Lewin and Christine Arnold, who came seventh overall with a score of 65.06%. Ian Bell and Mike Porteous were in 14th place with 62.52%, whilst Hendrik Payne and Peter Lacey were close behind in 16th place with 62.37%.”
The British Summer Sim Pairs contest is part of a series of simultaneous pairs events organised by the English Bridge Union each year.
“Identical bridge hands are played simultaneously by players of all abilities,” said Sarah.
“This year the event was staged over four days and saw a total of 2,724 bridge players from around England taking part.”
Frome Bridge Club secretary John Perry said he was delighted with the result and congratulated all the successful pairs, saying they were excellent results for the club.
