FROME Community Pottery organised workshops during July, aimed at those new to pottery and also those who couldn’t bear to have such a long summer break.
Andrew Eddleston ran a workshop for experienced “throwers” and one for complete beginners, both lasting five sessions within one intensive week, which were both fully subscribed. Hiro Takahashi’s Raku workshop ran for two consecutive Saturdays, and was also fully subscribed.
This produced dramatic colours and effects as befits a technique that includes plunging red hot ceramics into sawdust and letting the flames work their magic. The slightly gentler “smoke burnished” workshop also produced some amazing results, with students asking for more of the same next summer – if not sooner!
The pottery classes are run by Frome Community Education and the brochure for courses starting in September is already out, and classes are filling fast.
Pottery organiser, Malcolm Lloyd said, “We have had a terrific response since taking over the pottery classes in January. Both spring and summer term numbers were good, and we are adding two further classes for the September programme, to cope with the increased demand.
“The summer workshops were a great way for students to spend some dedicated time on just one aspect of the subject, and they really enjoyed themselves. Having also helped give the pottery a “spring clean”, the students are really supporting us in this venture.”
Details of classes can be found at www.frome commed.org or at the Cheese and Grain, who take all the bookings for the community education classes.
