THE dangers of runaway climate change are the subject of a talk by Frome District Councillor, Shane Collins, to Mendip District Council on Monday 25th September.
“It looks a strong possibility that there might not be any ice at the North Pole by October and that is the first time it’s happened in all of human history,” said Shane Collins, who is a Green Party councillor for Keyford ward in Frome.
The idea of the talk, which is open to the public, is to bring district councillors up to speed with the implications of the latest science on climate change and to think about solutions, such as local food and energy production, he added.
The talk is just one of a series of discussions about climate change in the area in the next few weeks. On Tuesday 3rd October Councillor Collins will be hosting a Q&A in the Westlands Centre, Yeovil, after a 7.30pm showing of ‘An Inconvenient Sequel’, former US vice-president Al Gore’s latest film on the issue.
In addition, Frome Town Council is hosting a series of free talks by environmental researcher and writer, Nikki Jones, on climate issues in the coming months. The first talk, ‘What is Climate Change?’ will be held at Frome Town Hall on Thursday 28th September at 7.00pm. These events are supported by Sustainable Frome and East Mendip Green Party.
“We have got to get serious about climate change. These talks are about bringing awareness of the issue to local councillors and people,” said cllr Collins.
Councillor Shane Collins will address Mendip District Council at its offices in Shepton Mallet at 5.00pm on Monday 25th September. The public are welcome to attend.
